Native Hawaiian Values of Māmala Hoa

  • Aloha Akua:
  • To know and love Akua, to recognize His hand in all things and realize our dependence on Him for all things.

  • Aloha:
  • To love others as ourselves and to do so unconditionally, to live a life of charity and forgiveness.

  • Pono:

    To care for the physical and spiritual wellbeing of persons and places.

  • Kahu:

    To think, speak, and act in a manner that is honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men. To be balanced physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Also refers to the care and balancing of natural and cultural resources.

  • Haʻahaʻa:

    To be humble, modest, and grateful; treating others with respect and Aloha.

  • ʻImi naʻauao:

    To seek enlightenment, not only the acquirement of knowledge, but of true wisdom.

  • Poʻokela:

    To be diligent in the pursuit of excellence.

  • Lōkahi:

    To seek harmony, unity, collaboration, and balance.

  • Hoʻomau:

    To preserve, protect, and perpetuate that which is Pono.

  • Kuleana:

    To understand and fulfill one’s area of stewardship and responsibility.

  • Hoʻokoa:

    To be courageous, brave, steadfast, and faithful in the face of trials, challenges, and opposition. To be engaged in a good cause, to fight the good fight, to finish the race, to be a man. E Hoʻo Kanaka!
